Calla Lily

Inspired by the elegant shape of the Calla Lily, the Wuhan Energy Flower building is one of the greenest and sustainable buildings in the world. When tasked with designing the new headquarters for the Wuhan Energy Center, the architects looked to nature and found the grand calla lily, a symbol of hope, prosperity, and greatness, as the perfect object to design the construction of this green building. Just as the calla lily’s petals open up to soak in the sun’s light and energy, soo to does the roof of the Energy Flower which is covered with solar panels. The chalice-shaped flower bud collects rainwater for nourishment, and in this building, the rainwater is collected and used to provide water to the restrooms and gardens. The pistil tower holds within it a wind turbine for harnessing the power of the wind and for providing natural air ventilation for the offices. The roof sits at an angle to provide shade to its lower part, keeping the offices within cool during summer. It’s a remarkable design that is also functional, sustainable, and extremely energy efficient.

An extraordinary structure that symbolizes the Oneness of Religions and the Oneness of Humankind, the Lotus Temple is a beautifully symmetrical architectural building shaped like a lotus blossom. There are three rows of nine petals that create the rounded form of the lotus flower. The lower level of petals curves outward with each petal forming a canopy over each of the 9 entrances. The exterior is covered in white marble and is also used on the floor of the interior of the temple. The open space of the dome holds up to 2,500 people. Reflections of light dancing off the marble floors, concrete, and reflecting pools that surround the structure provide the only decoration. The point of this temple is to bring people of all faiths, religions, and creed together to worship without any belief being promoted over another. The beautiful shape of the lovely lotus blossom has captured this sentiment perfectly. With over 4 million visitors a year, the Lotus Temple is one of the most visited temples in the world.
